Pastel, chalk, and colored pencil on bristol board

I've always been fascinated by mythology and belief systems. I think we all create a personal mythology about ourselves at different points in life.

I created these artworks when I first moved to Cleveland from Manila. You will notice that I signed with my maiden name in the first artwork, an elephant drawing I based on legends from India. The next drawing is my underwater take on the Pieta and images from the Catholic faith. I created this work the same year I got married. The third and final piece is a drawing of a goddess and a Philippine monster, the tikbalang

Pastel is my favorite medium. I first learned from the Philippine artist Rody Herrera, who taught me to use pastels in unconventional color applications. Since then I have been heavily influenced by Fauvism and surrealists like Salvador Dali.
